On 17 May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constituted a public health emergency of international concern. The current round was triggered by the Bendibujo Ebola virus, with a death rate of about 30 to 50 per cent, and no specific vaccines or therapeutic drugs are available.

The United States introduced a ban on the entry of non-United States citizens who had visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the last 21 days, as early as May of this year, and further extended the restrictions to United States citizens in July, on the basis of which this new rule is being upgraded to cover all international travellers.
